Our
office performs bone densitometry to diagnose osteoporosis and measure
response to treatment. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by
diminished structural integrity of the skeleton, which results in an
increased risk of fracture. The disease develops silently over a period of
years, and if not prevented or left untreated, it can progress painlessly
until a bone breaks. Any bone can be affected, but of special concern are
fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. Until recently, osteoporosis was
thought to be a natural consequence of aging, however, it’s finally
recognized as a preventable and treatable condition. Low
dose x-rays of two different energies are used to distinguish between bone
and soft tissue, giving a very accurate measurement of bone density at
these sites. We use a Lunar DPX-IQ dual energy x-ray absorptiometer, the
state-of-the-art technology for measuring bone density. Scans are
accomplished within a few minutes and a report is sent to your physician
by the next day. The results of a bone density test can determine if
medication to prevent or treat osteoporosis is advisable for you. Throughout
life, bones maintain themselves. During menopause, estrogen levels
decline, causing bone resorptin to exceed bone formation, resulting in a
loss of bone mass. While women are four times more likely than men to
develop the disease, men also suffer from osteoporosis. Important
risk factors for osteoporosis include: Female Caucasian Advanced
